Students at North Dakota State University are working to launch a television station called the Bison Information Network.

NDSU has The Spectrum student newspaper and student-run Thunder Radio, but students see a need for a campus TV station, said graduate student Mike Ostlie. The NDSU student government technology commission is working to secure funding for the project and hopes to kick off the Bison Information Network this fall.

“We thought this would be a great opportunity for NDSU to reach out to the community, as well as keep the students more informed about what’s going on around campus,” said Ostlie, one of the project’s leaders. Students would like the programming to air on campus, on the Internet and on local public access channels, Ostlie said.

Initially, students want to produce a news broadcast and later expand to cover athletics and air shows that students produce, he said.

The funding and other details for the project are being finalized this spring. Some of the money would likely come from student fees, Ostlie said.

The plans call for a studio to be constructed in the basement of the NDSU library and for it to be equipped with state-of-the-art high-definition equipment. NDSU’s communication department also would use the studio for classes.
